How AI Tools Can (Actually) Help You Improve Your Communication Skills

In this podcast episode, I talk about something many leaders are curious about, but not entirely sure how to approach: Can AI improve your communication skills? The short answer is yes, if you use it thoughtfully and strategically.

I’ve been researching and experimenting with AI tools like ChatGPT and others to see how they can best support communication development, especially for those working in global, multicultural organisations. Whether you’re a current or future global leader, what’s clear is that there are smart ways to use AI, and a few areas to avoid.

How can AI help improve Communication Skills?

Here are the four main ways I recommend using AI tools, such as ChatGPT:

1. Researching Ideas

Need quick ideas for a team day or want to explore fresh perspectives for a presentation? Tools like ChatGPT are great for sparking ideas and offering different viewpoints, helping you develop the recommendations and proposals you want to communicate.

2. Boosting Productivity

Whether you’re summarising meeting notes, writing emails or preparing talking points for a stakeholder conversation, AI can help you create a strong first draft and save valuable time. You can even upload handwritten notes and get back structured summaries.

3. Thinking Partner

Stuck with a team challenge? AI can be your silent sounding board. Feed it context and questions, and use it to explore possible ways forward. You might not get the final answer, but it can help you think through the options before a difficult conversation or team situation. Respect confidentiality at all times.

4. Download Partner

Ever had one of those emotionally charged moments after a tricky meeting? AI can be a non-judgemental space to process it. Type or voice-record your thoughts, let it help you unpick what happened, and then move into more logical reflection. It’s not a substitute for human empathy, but it can be a step towards getting rid of the frustrations.

But don’t forget…

This isn’t about letting AI do the work for you. It’s about using it with intention. Here’s what not to do:

  • Don’t copy and paste outputs without editing in your own tone of voice.
  • Don’t share anything confidential, especially in regards to individuals, teams or yout organisation.
  • Don’t let AI replace real human conversation.
  • And don’t forget your core: communication is about connection, presence and trust, all human, and all still essential.

Final thought

AI is a range of tools, which when used thoughtfully and intentionally, can strengthen your communication. It won’t lead for you, but it can help you get clearer, quicker and more focused on how you show up as a communicator.
