Become a Global Leader: The Journey Behind the Book
There are moments in every leader’s journey when reflection meets action, and for me, that moment is now. On publication day for my first book, Become a Global Leader, I sat down with my friend, Enfys Maloney, to talk about the story behind the book, the lessons I’ve learned along the way, and what true leadership really looks like behind the scenes.
In this podcast episode, the tables are turned, and Enfys interviewed me. Together we explored not only the themes of the book, but what it means to lead, to grow, and to find your voice as a global leader.
Why This Book, and Why Now
This book has lived in my heart for years. It’s the culmination of my 10 years supporting clients across industries and continents, bringing together everything I’ve learned about leadership, communication skills and cultural intelligence.
For a long time, it was a dream on my vision board: ‘write my book.’ But like many leaders, I got caught up in work, and told myself each year that I’d do it ‘when I had more time.; What I’ve realised is that time doesn’t magically appear, you have to decide that now is the time.
Once I made that decision, I sought out the right support, including a book coach and mentor to help me with accountability. Self-leadership isn’t about doing everything on your own. It’s about recognising when you need support, guidance and encouragement to stay on track.
What Does it Mean to be a Global Leader Today
When people think of leadership, they often imagine confidence, decisiveness and control. But being a global leader today is about so much more than that. It starts with self-awareness, knowing who you are, what energy you bring and how you show up in the world.
A great leader creates space, for reflection, for growth, for others to thrive. That’s why in my coaching, I help leaders as a thinking partner and sounding board to find that breathing space to think, reflect and realign. Leadership development isn’t only about strategy, performance and leading others; it’s also about self-leadership.
Being Vulnerable
One of the most powerful parts of our conversation was about vulnerability. Culturally, leaders are often expected to hold everything together, especially in high power distance and hierarchical cultures, but leadership also means being authentic about the range of your emotions.
This is tough where leadership expectations put pressure on to have the answers, to know the perfect next step, or to be in control.
I’ve learned that showing vulnerability and being more open, whatever comes up, can be an act of strength, as it builds trust and connection with others. It’s not about oversharing, but about being real so others feel they can share more personal topics with you too.
My Personal Highs and Lows while Writing
This year has been a mix of profound highs and deep lows for me. Alongside the excitement of writing my book, I also lost my father. It was a time that forced me to pause, to grieve and to reflect.
When I eventually returned to writing, I had to reconnect with the reason I do this work and why I was writing a book even in the 1st place. Ultimately, I realised it’s not about me, it’s about how I help others. I have something valuable and unique to help global professionals and teams with. Remembering the impact I can have on someone’s career growth and leadership journey brought me back to purpose.
Through that experience, I leaned into what I call my resilience factors: sleep, exercise, time outdoors and good food. These small but vital routines keep me grounded and focused when things feel tough.
How This Book Will Help You
The book focuses on 4 key pillars of Global Leader Communication™:
- Empower your confidence
- Master your clarity to elevate your influence
- Bridge challenging conversations
- Connect with cultural intelligence
These 4 pillars represent the strategies, skills and mindsets that unlock your genuine impact, influence and growth. They help you amplify your impact, lead confidently, communicate clearly and connect across cultures.
I’ve seen what happens when leaders activate these- they gain promotions, move up to board-level roles, open up public speaking opportunities, and most importantly, personal transformation.
What’s Next
Writing this book isn’t the end of a journey; it’s the start of a new one. My book is about purpose, legacy and the belief that our leadership creates connection across teams, organisations and borders.
I’ll be doing more speaking, more coaching and facilitation, and continuing to help even more leaders around the world step into their full potential. Because the world needs more global leaders, who know how to build trust and collaboration through how they communicate to connect with people as humans.
