In this episode, I want to take you behind the scenes of the first pillar of the book: Empower Your Confidence: what it is, what it isn’t, and how to practically build it to step into your future leadership.
Confidence Is Not What You Think It Is
Let’s start by busting a myth: confidence isn’t a fixed state. It’s not something you either have or you don’t. And it’s certainly not a switch you can flick on and expect to stay on forever.
Confidence is dynamic. It fluctuates, and that’s normal. It rises as you grow into your leadership identity and dips again when you’re stretching beyond your comfort zone. But here’s the thing: those dips? They’re not signs of weakness. They’re signs of growth. They show that you’re in motion, evolving, becoming more of the leader you are meant to be.
The real challenge is in how we interpret those moments. Too often, people treat discomfort as a red flag, when in fact, it’s a green light to keep going.
Four Practical Ways to Empower Your Confidence
In Become a Global Leader, this pillar is broken down into four key chapters, all designed to help you build and sustain real, grounded confidence that aligns with your leadership journey. Here is an overview of the critical topics you need to know about to empower your own confidence.
1. Know Your Unique Value as a Leader
It sounds simple, doesn’t it? But many people skip past this. They receive feedback, file it away and move on. Or worse, they focus almost exclusively on their weaknesses, overlooking what they already do brilliantly.
If you want to build your confidence, you need to know your value, clearly and unapologetically. What makes you different? What do others consistently appreciate about the way you lead or communicate? Your unique value is the foundation of your future impact.
2. Identify What’s Holding You Back
This chapter looks at the internal stories and myths that block confidence. Imposter syndrome. Perfectionism. And one that comes up a lot for my global clients: If I’m too confident, will I come across as arrogant?
This is where cultural intelligence comes in. Confidence can be interpreted very differently depending on your cultural context, taking into account power distance, hierarchy, or collectivist behavioural preferences. Understanding this nuance is key to navigating areas that block you.
3. Define Your Leadership Identity
Your leadership identity is part of your personal brand. Whether you like it or not, people already have a perception of who you are and what you represent.
So why not own it?
In this chapter, I introduce the idea of the Visibility Pyramid, a practical framework to help you grow your visibility step by step. It’s not about shouting the loudest. It’s about being strategic, intentional and consistent with how and where you show up, so you are recognised as a leader at the next level.
4. Own the Room and Signal Leadership
This final area is about presence, your leadership energy, how you hold space and how others experience you. It’s not about copying someone else’s style. It’s about dialling into what’s true for you and learning how to project that with intention.
It’s the final piece of the confidence puzzle, the bit that makes people feel your leadership, not just see it.
