Episode overview:
Present with Purpose and Authority
As a current or future global leader, how you communicate shapes your impact, your growth, and your career development. Yet even the most experienced leaders often feel they’re not showing up with their full voice of authority when they speak.
Whether you’re presenting in the boardroom, leading a town hall, or contributing at a conference, it’s not just about the content of your message, it’s how you deliver it. That’s what positions you as a leader to watch, someone who communicates with clarity and purpose.
This is a recurring theme in my coaching and workshops. Many of the senior professionals I work with are already excelling, but they want to sharpen their edge, to be seen and heard in a way that enhances their leadership reputation. So, here we’ll explore what holds you back, how to structure compelling messages, and how to speak with real impact.
Why aren’t you speaking with authority already?
Let’s start by being honest. What’s stopping you from stepping into your full voice of authority?
For many, it’s fear. Fear of judgement, fear of getting it wrong, fear of not being understood. Sometimes it’s about discomfort with how you sound, or feeling like you need to fit in with what others expect.
At the heart, it is often a version of imposter syndrome. Even experienced professionals can question whether they’re ‘good enough’ when they speak up, especially in high-stakes situations. But let’s be clear: your ideas matter, and your voice matters. You don’t need to perform. You need to be purposeful.
Framework for Presenting with Purpose
If you want to lead with your voice and communicate with confidence, you need clarity first. Here’s a five-question framework to help you develop messages that land powerfully and intentionally:
- Why?
What’s the purpose of this talk or presentation? What’s the change you want to create with the audience? Get specific. Write it down in one sentence. - Who?
Who is your audience, and what matters to them? Whether it’s five people or five hundred, their perspective should shape how you approach the presentation. - What?
What’s the one thing, or if that’s too tough, at most, three, that you need to say? If you only had three minutes, what would you make sure to include? - So what?
Why should the audience care? This question forces relevance and helps you focus on what truly resonates. - Now what?
What’s the next step? Every impactful presentation includes a clear call to action, whether it’s to reflect, to act, or to follow up.
Once you’ve mapped your core messages, it’s time to build your story. And please step away from the slides. Start with sticky notes. Lay out your messages visually so you can see the big picture. This helps with flow, clarity and ensuring each point has a purpose.
Speak with IMPACT: a Bold Communication Toolkit for Leaders
Great messaging is only part of the equation. How you deliver your message is just as critical. That’s where my IMPACT framework comes in, a practical tool I use with clients to help them prepare to present with confidence and credibility.
I – Intention
Start by setting your intention. What does authority mean to you, and what does it look like in this moment? Visualise how you want to come across.
M – More Breath
Your breath powers your voice. Deep, full breathing calms nerves and strengthens vocal delivery. Even the most confident speakers use breathing to ground themselves.
P – Prepare Your Energy
Your physical presence sets the tone. Use power poses, movement, or mindfulness to embody confidence before you step on stage or go live virtually.
A – Action
Bring your message to life with movement. Whether you’re standing or sitting, subtle gestures and body language help you emphasise key points and engage your audience.
C – Connect
Speak with your audience, not at them. Eye contact, smiles, nods, and rhetorical questions make your delivery feel conversational and human.
T – Tone of Voice
Use your voice with intention. Vary your pace and pitch. Emphasise what matters. Avoid sounding robotic or overly rehearsed. This is about you, leading through your natural, authentic voice.
Your Voice, Your Authority, Your Future
Being a global leader in today’s complex, global workplace means knowing how to communicate with both authority and empathy. It’s not about being loud. It’s about being clear, intentional, and connected.
So take the time to reflect. Prepare properly. Show up in your full authority, not only for yourself, but for those around you who are waiting to be led.
Reflective Questions to Consider:
- What is the core message you need to land in your next presentation or speaking opportunity?
- So what? Why does it matter to your audience?
- Which part of my IMPACT framework do you want to focus on developing?
