Resilience for Global Leaders: Powering Up Before You Hit 0%

As 2025 continues, the pace of leadership isn’t slowing down. If anything, it’s accelerating. Organisations are navigating restructures, redundancies and rapid change. Even if your own role hasn’t shifted, the pressure to deliver, perform and stay ahead continues to climb.

For global leaders, or those aspiring to lead, resilience isn’t a “nice to have”. It’s essential. It’s the foundation for sustaining energy, making impactful decisions and communicating effectively with cultural intelligence. And yet, it’s often the first thing we forget when we’re under pressure.

So here I’m sharing a practical, empowering 5 Step approach to building resilience that you can start applying today- no yoga retreat or sabbatical required.

Why Resilience Matters More Than Ever

Leaders are constantly navigating uncertainty. Whether it’s managing teams across time zones, leading through cultural complexity, or hitting the next strategic milestone, the demands can quietly chip away at our energy.

If you’re a future leader, working toward more responsibility, the earlier you understand and practise resilience, the more sustainable your growth and impact will be.

So let me tell you a story.

Late last year, my laptop kept cutting out. No warning, just suddenly dead. I took it to a repair specialist, and the answer was simple: I’d been letting the battery run to 0% too often. “You need to plug it in at 20%,” he said. That way, you avoid damaging the battery in the first place.

It struck me- how often do we do exactly this as leaders? We push through, ignore the warning signs, and burn ourselves out. We wait until we’re at 0% before we act. The truth is, resilience means recognising when we’re hitting 20%, and taking action then.

The Five Steps to Resilience

This is a practical approach designed for busy professionals. No fluff, no overcommitment, just realistic steps to start powering yourself back up.

  1. Notice When You’re Running Low

The first step is awareness. Can you tell when your metaphorical battery hits 20%? For some, it’s physical- tiredness, sluggishness, or even getting unwell. For others, it’s emotional- feeling drained, impatient, or overwhelmed.

Most of us have trained ourselves to push through and ignore these signs. So this is your moment to start noticing. What does low battery feel like for you?

  1. Identify Your Resilience Factors

What energises you? What helps you feel like your best, most capable self?

For me, 2 key factors are exercise and spending time outdoors. Without those, I know my energy and clarity start to dip, especially mid-afternoon.

Take a moment and ask yourself: What are your resilience factors? What do you need consistently to lead effectively?

  1. Make It Tangible and Real

Once you’ve identified your resilience factors, translate them into daily, manageable micro actions.

Let’s say your factor is exercise. That doesn’t mean committing to the gym seven days a week. It might mean a 10-minute walk at lunch, three times a week. For me, I schedule runs early in the morning before my children wake up, so I set my alarm and I lay out my kit the night before.

Whatever your micro actions are, schedule them. Don’t leave it to chance. Make it real.

  1. Set Boundaries and Non-Negotiables

Here’s where many people trip up. It’s easy to plan, but harder to protect that time.

You might need to ask for support, whether that’s from a partner, a colleague, or your wider team. You may have to say no to something else in order to prioritise your resilience. This is not about being selfish; it’s about sustaining your leadership over the long term.

  1. Communicate Clearly and Courageously

Boundaries only work when they’re communicated. And yes, that can be uncomfortable- especially if saying “no” doesn’t come easily.

Here’s a tip: try reframing your “no”. Say “not now” or “later”, rather than shutting things down completely. Language matters, particularly in global leadership where cultural communication skills are key.

Reflect, Recalibrate, Recharge

Let’s pause for a moment, it’s time to reflect. Ask yourself:

  • What are your resilience factors?
  • What micro actions can you commit to this week?
  • What boundaries do you need to put in place to make this real?
  • How can you communicate these with clarity and confidence?

Write them down, talk them through with a colleague or coach, and start taking action, however small.
