Episode overview:
Today we look at a challenge that so many global leaders face, but rarely talk about: how to ‘sell yourself’ without feeling like you’re bragging or out of line with your values. Whether you’re navigating a new workplace, aiming for promotion, or facing change in your organisation, this topic is crucial for your growth and future leadership impact.
Let’s explore how to position yourself effectively as a leader, develop your communication skills, and build your visibility in a way that feels authentic and empowering.
Why ‘Selling Yourself’ Isn’t What You Think
The very phrase ‘selling yourself’ often makes people recoil. It conjures up images of self-promotion and boastfulness, particularly if you’re from a culture that values modesty or collective achievement over individual wins.
But here’s the reframe: it’s not about selling, it’s about positioning yourself for your career advancement. It’s about making sure others understand your value, your contribution, your thinking, and your leadership. It’s about being seen, not as someone who ticks boxes, but as someone who delivers meaningful impact.
Step 1: Know Your Value
You can’t position yourself effectively if you’re not crystal clear on what makes you stand out. What are your strengths, your unique skills, the qualities people consistently appreciate about you?
Think beyond your job title. You are the sum of your experiences, talents, qualifications, and the unique perspective you bring. This is your professional USP (your Unique Selling Point) and understanding it is the foundation for your growth and leadership.
Step 2: Frame Your Value in the Language of Business
Now you know your value, the next step is to frame it so others understand it too, especially those outside your immediate team or function, especially if you are in a more technical or specialist role.
This is about translating your impact into language that resonates across departments and seniority levels. Instead of the technical jargon, explain what you do in simple, compelling terms: how does your work help the business grow, serve clients, or prepare for the future?
When you frame your value like this, people start to see you not only as a contributor, but as a leader driving growth.
Step 3: Know Who Needs to Know You
Visibility isn’t about shouting the loudest, it’s about being seen by the right people.
Start identifying your key stakeholders, those who influence talent decisions, those who lead cross-functional areas, or those who are senior enough to advocate for your progression. Ask yourself: Do they know who I am? Do they know the impact I deliver?
Then begin to build visibility with them, consistently and intentionally.
Step 4: Share Your Wins and Learnings
This is the part many find tricky. If talking about your achievements feels uncomfortable, start with your team’s successes. Use “we” language and then highlight your specific contribution within it.
Alternatively, share your learnings, both what went well and what you’ve adjusted in response to challenges. This shows self-awareness and strategic thinking, and helps others learn from your lessons.
You can do this in formal meetings, or informally via a quick message, email, or update. What matters is consistency.
Step 5: Be a Cross Business Leader
Whatever your role, it’s time to think beyond your department. Great global leaders have organisational awareness. They bring fresh insights from the wider industry, client landscape, or emerging trends, and share them internally to help their organisations think more strategically.
This might mean curating key takeaways from conferences, sharing useful insights from what you’re reading, or simply being a connector of ideas. When you do this, you position yourself as a thought leader with future-focused impact.
Step 6: Project Your Presence
What impression do you want to leave in every room you enter? What three words would you love people to associate with you?
Defining your leadership presence is key. Then show up consistently with that intention. It doesn’t matter whether you’re in a one-to-one or presenting to the board, your presence should align with how you want to be seen and the career future you’re working towards.
Reflection Questions
Before you move on, take a few moments to reflect:
- How can you frame your value and contribution to the organisation, beyond your job title?
- Who are the key people that need to know more about you?
- How do you share more of your wins?
