The 6 Frames of Influence: A Smarter Way to Get Buy-In

For every professional, there comes a point where you need to convince others to say yes to your recommendation, idea, or initiative. But what happens when you hit resistance? When your logic seems sound, but the decision-makers aren’t on board?

Here we explore a practical and powerful approach: tapping into communication frames to position your message and influence more effectively.

Why Framing Matters

Imagine you’re hanging a beautiful piece of art. You could tape it straight onto the wall. Or… you could choose the right frame, one that brings the piece to life, enhances its colours, and makes it truly pop. Your ideas are no different.

The way you frame a message is what makes it resonate. When done well, it turns a good proposal into a no-brainer. And in complex, global environments, where you are managing multiple stakeholders, this approach can be your edge.

The Six Influence Frames

Here are six practical frames you can apply right now to make your message more compelling:

1. Purpose Frame

Answer the question: Why can’t we stay where we are?
This frame focuses on what’s at risk if no change happens. Highlight current challenges, commercial risks, or inefficiencies. Make it clear why doing nothing is not an option.

2. Vision Frame

Link your idea to the bigger picture.
What is your organisation aiming for? Show how your recommendation aligns with the strategy, vision or mission. This is especially persuasive when influencing senior stakeholders who are thinking long-term.

3. External Frame

Bring in an outside perspective.
Whether it’s competitor benchmarking, market trends or best practice from other industries, this frame positions your idea within a broader context, a must for demonstrating forward-thinking.

4. Customer, Client or Investor Frame

Focus on those who matter most.
How will this benefit your end-user or key external stakeholders? Quantify improvements, and make sure the value is visible and communicated clearly.

5. Internal Frame

Zoom in on the organisation’s internal needs.
Think about operational efficiency, commercial value, or cultural development. Could your idea improve team wellbeing, save time, or enhance cross-functional collaboration?

6. Future Frame

Position your proposal to show it’s future-proof.
How will this idea help the business stay ahead? This frame appeals to growth-minded leaders and shows you’re thinking beyond today’s problems.

How to Use the Frames

You don’t need to use all six at once. The key is to select the right frame for the audience, moment and message. Sometimes one is enough. At other times, two or three will add depth and help you connect with different stakeholders.

Think About Your Own Situation

To make this practical, bring to mind a current situation where you’re trying to influence. Perhaps you’re proposing a process change, launching a new initiative, or requesting investment in your team. Which of the frames could help you shape a stronger argument?

Reflection Questions:

  • What idea, change or recommendation are you trying to gain support for right now?
  • Which of the six frames could strengthen your message?

When you use these positioning frames, you take control of how your message lands. You move from being a good communicator to someone who can create compelling messages to support your recommendations.
