Episode overview:

There is something powerful about the start of a new year. A natural pause, a chance to reset and a sense that anything is possible again. As we step into 2026, this is your opportunity to move beyond reflection and into action.

This is our first episode of the year and it draws on the opening chapter of my bestselling book, Become a Global Leader. It is designed to help you create momentum early, think bigger about your leadership and set yourself up for a year of intentional progress.

This is not about vague resolutions or safe, easy-to-reach goals. It is about getting clear, getting honest and taking action.

Step one, lift your gaze beyond the obvious

Many of the leaders I work with have goals. The problem is not a lack of ambition, it is that the goals are often too small. They are achievable, comfortable and familiar. They sit neatly within what feels realistic.

At the start of 2026, I want you to lift your gaze.

Ask yourself a much bigger question. What is the leadership impact you would love to have over your lifetime, not only this year. What does becoming a global leader genuinely mean to you? If you removed the practical constraints and stopped thinking in increments, what would your boldest leadership ambition look like?

These questions can feel uncomfortable. If you are used to focusing on the next step or the next promotion, thinking in this zone may feel unfamiliar. That is completely normal. Big thinking often needs space and, sometimes, a sounding board. What matters is that you allow yourself to explore it rather than shutting it down.

Step two, get clear on your ‘why’

Ambition alone is not enough. If you want to pursue big leadership goals, you need to understand why they matter to you.

When things get challenging, and guaranteed they will, your motivation is what keeps you moving forward. This is why the ‘why’ matters just as much as the what.

Spend time reflecting on what your ultimate leadership role looks like. Where are you working? In which industry or organisation? What level of responsibility and influence do you want? What pay grade does that role sit at? This is about getting detailed and specific.

Then go deeper. Why does this matter to you personally and professionally? What impact would achieving this have on your life more broadly? Who benefits when you step into that level of leadership? Your team, your organisation, your clients, your industry?

Also consider the personal impact. What would this enable for you and for the people close to you? Opportunity, security, freedom, choice? These are powerful motivators, and they deserve your attention.

Finally, think about communication. How do your leadership communication skills support this ambition? Confidence, clarity, connection and cultural intelligence are not optional extras. They are central to your ability to achieve your ambitious goals.

Step three, translate the big vision into a 2026 focus

Once you have clarity on the long term, it is time to zoom back in.

What is the leadership goal for 2026 that moves you meaningfully towards that bigger ambition? This is not about doing what feels safe or expected. It is about choosing a goal that stretches you and feels significant.

Ask yourself what a brilliant end to 2026 would look like if you were looking back with pride in 12 months time. What role, responsibility or shift would you want to have achieved? Is it progression within your organisation, a move elsewhere, building something of your own, or a hybrid approach?

Be honest about which communication skills need your focus first to enable these dreams. Confidence, clarity, handling challenging conversations or building connection across cultures. Progress comes from prioritising where to start.

Step four, make your goals visible and real

Insight without action changes very little. To create momentum, your leadership goals need to stay front of mind and have actions attached to them.

Find a way to make them visible. That might be a vision board, regular journaling, identifying your words to guide you through the year, or regular check-ins with yourself. What matters is the consistency.

When your goals are visible, your brain stays focused on finding solutions. You are more likely to notice opportunities, make better decisions and stay aligned with what truly matters.

2026 is your opportunity to lead with greater clarity, confidence and impact. The question is not what is possible, but how intentionally you choose to move towards it. Start here with your reflection questions:

  • What leadership impact do you want to have over your career?

  • Why does becoming a global leader matter to you?

  • Who benefits when you step into that leadership role?

  • What is your bold leadership goal for 2026?

  • Which leadership communication skills will most support that goal?

  • How will you keep this vision visible throughout the year?
