Celebrating 3 Years of the Podcast: Leadership Lessons from Behind the Mic

Today marks a major milestone, 3 years of my podcast, Cultural Communication Confidence, in the same week as International Podcast Day. In this special celebratory episode, I’m going behind the mic to reflect on the real lessons I’ve learned from creating nearly 150 episodes. And, more importantly, I’m sharing what those lessons mean for you as a current or future global leader.

This isn’t only about podcasting. It’s about what I’ve learnt along the way about global leadership, communication, cultural intelligence and growth. What does it take to stay visible, relevant and connected? What does it mean to take action before you’re ‘ready’? And how do you keep leading with confidence, especially when it’s not perfect?

What you will learn in this episode:

  • Why your personal purpose is a non-negotiable, and how to get clearer on it
  • How imperfect action builds real confidence and momentum
  • Why broadcasting isn’t communication, and how to invite true conversation
  • What it means to show up with energy and presence, especially in virtual spaces
  • Why celebration matters, and how to keep evolving and growing

Reflection Questions:

  • What is your personal purpose? Why do you do the work you do?
  • Where are you waiting for “perfect” circumstances before taking action? What would change if you just started?
  • How are you encouraging conversation in your team, not broadcasting?

Episode Overview:

Behind the Mic: 5 Leadership Lessons from 3 Years of Podcasting

This month, my podcast Cultural Communication Confidence turns 3 years old. Nearly 150 episodes in, we’re marking the podcast’s birthday in the same week as International Podcast Day. While there’s plenty to celebrate and milestones we have achieved along the way, I’m taking you behind the mic to reflect on 5 big lessons I’ve learned from creating and sharing the podcast.

These aren’t only podcasting lessons, they’re leadership lessons, directly relevant to your career, your communication, your development and your future impact as a global leader.

So, whether you’re leading a team now, preparing for your next move, or simply looking to show up with more confidence and clarity, this is for you.

1. Know Your Purpose, and Own It

From the beginning, I’ve always been clear about the purpose behind this podcast: to connect ambitious, global professionals with the communication skills and cultural intelligence they need to thrive in their global careers.

Without that clarity, I simply wouldn’t be here 3 years later, motivated to continue creating and sharing my podcast episodes.

The same applies to leadership. As a global leader, it’s not enough to know your team or organisational goals. You have to know why you’re doing it, what drives you personally, and what impact you want to make.

Purpose gives you resilience when things get tough. It energises you through change and uncertainty. And crucially, it helps others buy into your vision because you believe in it yourself.

2. Take Imperfect Action

The first episode of this podcast wasn’t perfect. There was building work outside, traffic noise, the tech was new and clunky, but I did it anyway and shared it out there.

That imperfect action was the first step towards continuing towards something bigger.

In leadership, there’s often pressure to get things right, to wait until you feel confident before you take a risk or share your voice. But in reality, confidence often comes after the action, not before.

Starting and acting beats perfection, every time. You grow by doing.

Leadership development starts when you stop waiting to be ready.

3. Don’t Broadcast, Create Conversation

Yes, podcasting is technically a one-way medium. But I never want this to be about me talking at you. I want to create a conversation, to invite questions, reflections and feedback.

And the same is true in your team communication. Being a strong communicator isn’t about speaking the most. It’s about creating space for others to contribute, building dialogue and truly listening.

Whether you’re leading cross-functional teams or working across time zones, the real question is: are you creating conversation, or simply delivering messages?

Conversations and listening deeply create connection.

4. Your Energy Matters

Leadership presence isn’t something you switch on in the room and then forget about. It’s the energy you project, the way people experience you, and the impression you leave, even when you’re not there.

Behind the mic, I’ve learned to be intentional about my energy. I prepare myself physically and mentally before each episode so that you can feel me, not just hear me.

So ask yourself: How do people experience you? Do you bring your energy, connection and authenticity to your communication, or are you going through the motions?

This matters, especially in virtual or hybrid teams, where communication is easily flattened.

Strong communication starts with intentionally projecting yourself.

5. Celebrate and Evolve

When I first started the podcast, I had no idea where it would lead. But I made a commitment to keep learning, growing and improving, and three years later, that’s still true.

Celebration is part of leadership too. It’s not only about outcomes, but about recognising progress. Marking milestones builds connection, reinforces motivation and helps people feel seen.

At the same time, leadership is never finished. There’s always another stage of growth, another opportunity to learn, and another way to expand your impact.

Pause and acknowledge how far you’ve come.

Reflection Questions

As always, I want you to take this away and apply it to your world. So here are some questions to help you do that:

  • What is your personal purpose? Why do you do your work?

  • Where might you be holding back, waiting for things to be ‘perfect’ before taking action?

  • How do you currently encourage conversation in your team?

  • What kind of energy do you bring into the (virtual or real) room?

  • What milestones are coming up for you and your team in the next six months? How will you mark and celebrate them?

Take the Next Step

To say thank you for being part of this journey, whether you’ve listened to one episode or all 150, I’ve created a free gift for you.

Message me directly on LinkedIn and I’ll send it to you.

And if you’ve enjoyed the podcast or found it valuable in your own development, I’d love for you to leave a review on Apple Podcasts. It helps more global leaders discover these conversations and step into their own leadership with confidence, clarity and cultural intelligence.
