What’s Holding You Back from Leadership Communication?

As we continue celebrating the 3rd birthday of the Cultural Communication Confidence podcast and approach our 150th episode, I wanted to pause and reflect on something I see time and time again in my work. It’s something that doesn’t get talked about nearly enough, and yet, it affects so many talented professionals striving to grow their impact and step up as global leaders.

In this episode, I walk you through the most common areas that limit visibility, confidence and voice. These are the hidden blockers that can quietly undermine even the most experienced professionals, and I know them well, not only from coaching others, but from my own career journey.

If you’re ready to elevate your communication skills, grow your leadership presence and truly be heard, this is for you.

1. The Imposter Syndrome That No One Talks About

“I don’t feel expert enough.”
“I’m not ready to share my voice in that room.”
“What if I’m not good enough?”

Sound familiar?

Imposter syndrome is one of the most common things I notice when working with future leaders, and yet many believe they’re the only one feeling it. The reality? Around 82% of professionals experience imposter syndrome at some point in their career.

And it doesn’t matter how senior you are. It’s a feeling that can creep in before an important presentation, a significant meeting, or at any opportunity where you want to step into more visibility. Left unaddressed, it can limit you from speaking up, sharing your perspective and being seen as the leader you already are.

The reframe:
Imposter syndrome is not a sign that you’re not ready, it’s a sign that you’re growing. It’s often a signal that you’re pushing into new territory. Rather than pulling away from the discomfort, lean into it. Treat it as a marker of growth towards your future leadership.

2. The Perfectionism and Performance Trap

Many of the global leaders I work with are high achievers, and with that comes the challenge of perfectionism. You prepare, rehearse and overthink. You may stay quiet in meetings or delay sharing ideas because you are working out how you want to say it and fear getting it wrong.

This becomes a vicious cycle: imposter syndrome feeds the perfectionism, which then keeps you from speaking up. It’s exhausting, and ultimately, it holds you back from making the impact you’re capable of.

The reframes to try here are:

  • ‘Your communication creates your visibility’. If you’re not speaking, you’re not seen, and your voice isn’t being heard. So commit to be heard and seen.

  • ‘It’s about conversation, not performance’. You’re not here to be performing as a TEDx speaker in every meeting. Leadership communication is about connecting to people, not performing.

  • ‘Said is better than perfect’. If you wait for perfect, you’ll stay silent. Your imperfect and half-formed thoughts add important value.

3. Believing You Have to Be Loud to Lead

Another misconception that holds people back is the belief that effective leaders must be loud and extroverted.

But that’s simply not true, and cultural intelligence shows us why.

Your leadership presence doesn’t need to mimic someone else’s style. There are many ways to be a successful global leader, and your communication should reflect your own preferences and personality, not force you into a mould.

The truth is: adapting to context matters, yes. But authenticity counts too. The most impactful communication comes from alignment between your cultural behaviours, leadership style and communication choices.

4. The Fear of Being “Too Confident”

“I want to speak up… but I don’t want to come across as arrogant.”

This is another blocker I hear often, and it’s rooted in both personal beliefs and cultural perceptions of leadership. You might come from a background where humility is prized, or where status is emphasised differently. Either way, the fear of being “too much” can stop you from being enough.

The reframe:
Confidence is not arrogance. Arrogance is about reinforcing your status to elevate yourself above others. Confidence is about expanding into your own leadership, owning your presence, and connecting at a human level. If your intention is to be authentic, not self-important, then that’s how you’ll be received.

Reflection Questions

To help you reflect more deeply on what might be holding you back, ask yourself:

  • Which of these blocks resonates most: imposter syndrome, perfectionism, fear of visibility or confidence?

  • Is there something else that’s been quietly limiting your voice?

  • Now that you’re more aware of what’s in the way, what is the first step you can take to shift forward?
