Confidence is the number one challenge I am hearing from leaders right now.
Whether you are stepping into your next role, leading in complexity, or already operating at a senior level, there are moments where self-doubt creeps in. And in today’s environment, with constant change, pressure and uncertainty, that challenge is only increasing.
In this episode, I share a practical and honest perspective on leadership confidence. Not as something you either have or do not have, but as something you build through action.
I explore the misconceptions that hold leaders back, why confidence often feels elusive, and what you can actually control. Most importantly, I introduce a simple framework to help you strengthen your confidence in a way that is grounded, practical and sustainable.
This is about moving forward despite the doubt, not waiting for confidence to appear first.
What you will learn in this episode:
- Why confidence is not a fixed trait, but something you build over time
- The common misconceptions that undermine leadership confidence
- The difference between external challenges and internal control
- Why confidence comes from action, not the other way around
- How to challenge self-doubt
- A practical framework to build confidence through identity, clarity and action
- How to define your own version of leadership energy
Are you waiting to feel confident before taking action, or moving forward despite the doubt?
How clearly have you defined your leadership identity and strengths?
What actions are you taking to build your confidence?
If this resonates, start with one part of the framework. Focus on your leadership identity, your clarity of direction, or your leadership energy and actions. Choose one and begin there.
And if confidence is something you want to explore more deeply, this is the theme of the next Leadership Breakfast I am hosting in London. This is a confidential space for leaders to reflect, share and gain clarity together on confidence actions.
If you would like to be part of that invitation list, message me on LinkedIn and I will share more details.

Episode overview:
Confidence is one of the most common challenges I hear from leaders right now. Whether you are stepping into your first leadership role, navigating the next level, or already leading at a senior level, there are moments where self-doubt creeps in.
And in today’s environment, that pressure is amplified. Complexity, global teams, constant change, expectations to perform, and the sense that you should have the answers. It is no surprise that confidence feels stretched.
So the question becomes, how do you build confidence when uncertainty is not going anywhere?
Confidence is not a fixed state
One of the biggest misconceptions about confidence is that you either have it or you do not.
In reality, confidence is not a permanent state. It is not something you switch on and it stays permanently on. It is something you build, maintain and revisit continuously.
As you grow in your career, your confidence will be challenged. That is not a sign that something is wrong, but a sign that you are stretching beyond your comfort zone and into uncharted territory.
The second misconception is that people who appear confident on the outside do not experience self-doubt. They do, but the difference is that they do not experience an absence of fear, but their willingness to keep stepping forward and take action despite it.
Confidence is built through action, and waiting to feel confident before you make your move, can slow you down, or stop your growth altogether.
Shift your focus to what you can control
When confidence feels low, it is easy to look externally and find reasons why. The organisation, the market, other people- there are so many factors creating uncertainty around you.
However, these are not within your control, and so putting your attention here will keep you in a low-confidence state. Instead, confidence comes from focusing internally, on the areas you can influence:
- Your mindset
- Your confidence foundations
- Your energy
- Your actions
This shift is powerful because it puts you back in control and moves you from reacting to external factors to leading yourself.
Challenge the limiting self-beliefs
A useful tool I often share with my clients is the framework F.E.A.R. – this acronym stands for False Evidence Appearing Real.
When you hear yourself thinking, ‘Everyone else in the room is more confident than me’ or ‘People will see that I am not ready’, pause and question it.
Is it true?
What evidence do you actually have?
Are there times when it’s not true?
Have you ever had feedback which demonstrates an alternative view?
Is there another perspective?
Often, what feels like fact is simply a self-limiting belief that you developed at some point in your life, and are repeating so it seems like the truth. Once you challenge it, step back and look at it with fresh eyes, you can create space for a different, more empowering one.
A practical framework to build your confidence
To make creating growth in your confidence tangible, I want to share with you a simple framework I use in my own work that you can apply straight away, focusing on three areas: Who, What and How.
Who: your leadership identity
Start with understanding who you are as a leader: what are your strengths and your capabilities, where are you already demonstrating leadership today?
Too often, people focus on the negative and overlook how they are already operating as a leader, so building confidence starts with recognising the value you bring and what you do today.
There is also a mindset shift here. You do not become a leader only when someone gives you the leader title- you have to decide it first, that you believe you are a leader and identify with that.
What: your leadership goal
Next, get clear on what you are working towards: what does leadership look like for you? What is the next step you are aiming for?
Then go further- what is the bigger version of that goal, the one you might not usually say out loud?
Clarity matters because when you know where you are going and how far your ambition stretches, your confidence has direction.
How: your energy and your actions
Finally, consider how you show up as a leader today. Leadership energy does not have to look and sound one way- it is not about being the loudest, most extrovert or dominant voice in the room.
There are many ways to express your leadership energy- for example, you could be thoughtful, calm, direct, connective, or quietly confident as the leader. The key is defining your version of leadership energy, not copying someone else’s.
Then focus on action- confidence grows through what you do consistently, the habits you build and how you pay attention to it. That might include reminding yourself of your leadership strengths regularly, reflecting on your achievements, building habits that support your leadership energy- such as exercise or structured thinking time, or even taking small, visible actions even when you feel uncertain.
Confidence follows action, not the other way around.
Small steps create momentum
You do not need a complete transformation overnight- what matters is consistent, intentional steps. The leaders I see building the strongest confidence are not those who never doubt themselves. They are the ones who keep moving forward anyway, who invest in their mindset, confidence foundations, energy and actions.
Reflection questions
As you think about your own leadership, take a moment to reflect:
- Where are you currently feeling challenged in your confidence?
- Which internal factor needs your attention most: mindset, foundations, energy or action?
- How clearly defined is your leadership identity today?
- What is one action you can take this week to strengthen your confidence?
Next steps
If this resonates, do not leave it as a reflection exercise- take one action today. Confidence is not something you wait for- it is a path you move forward on, step by step.
If you would value a space to explore this further, I am bringing together a small group of leaders for my next Leadership Breakfast in London to focus on the topic of confidence. This is a conversation-led space designed to help you think, reflect and strengthen your confidence alongside other experienced professionals.
If you would like to be part of the invite list, reach out to me on LinkedIn and we can continue the conversation.
